Edmodo: Linking the way “students live their lives and how they learn in school”

How wonderful would it be to utilize a platform that safely connects students with their teachers in and outside the classroom?  Well, I was recently introduced to just the tool!

Edmodo is an online platform intended to develop school environments to better reflect the technologically savvy world in which we live.  In 2008, Nic Borg and Jeff O'Hara, co-founded Edmodo upon discovering the essential need for social media platforms within classrooms.  As the two gurus explain on their website, Americans are connected everywhere they go, except for inside our schools.  Classroom resource sharing is vital to learning, and this learning process is being hindered by the parameters of the school environment.

Therefore, Nic and Jeff decided to implement a tool in which teachers are able to post messages, assign and grade classwork, share content and materials, and network and exchange with peers, while also offering and discussing classroom topics with their students.  All features on the website are driven entirely by teacher feedback.  The website’s success is dependent on the teacher community spreading the word of Edmodo’s usefulness.

So, I am fulfilling my teacher duty by sharing this piece of valuable information!  While perusing the Internet last night, I found an excellent BrainPop video on democracy (another excellent teaching resource).  Today in school, the students covered a topic in Social Studies that directly aligned with the video’s lesson.  Because of Edmodo, I was able to successfully share the link with my students via the Edmodo platform!  Voila!  Now my students are being offered an additional resource to complete their homework assignment tonight.

Best,

Ms. Vince
